Happily babies are almost never far removed from a parent or guardian’s sight and normally are not allowed to crawl around the house without close management. However, you must take a few safeguards to ensure your baby’s security. For example, let’s consider the one place that your baby spends most of her time alone – the one location your toddler spends time without being under your direct supervision – the crib.
To ensure your child’s safety, your baby’s crib must not have any sharp edges. In addition, the crib should have some sort of locking apparatus to maintain the sides of the crib in place. The distance as measured from the top of the rail to the top of the crib mattress should be a minimum of 26 inches with the mattress at its lowest level. However the greater this distances the better.
You want to ensure that the mattress fits snugly inside the crib with no space between the sides of the mattress and the rails of the crib. Also you want to make sure you have bumper pads in place to guard your baby from knocking against the sides. Babies do not need pillows and you shouldn’t place on inside the crib.
If you’re using a formerly used crib or a crib purchased from a second hand shop, always make sure that it’s up to date regarding required safety features. You may find that an older crib may have been painted with a lead based paint. Lead based paint could cause serious health issues if swallowed by your baby.
An older crib could also have side slats that are too far apart and could result in having your baby getting her head stuck. The distance between crib slats should be no more than 2 3/8 inches or about the width of a soda can.
Here are a few more tips to help keep your baby safe:
Make sure that you keep your baby away from plastic bags. Children can asphyxiate while trying to play with plastic bags.
Make certain that the blankets and bedding that you choose for your child are fireproof.
If you are thinking about placing a mobile over your baby’s crib, you should make sure that the mobile is out of reach and will not end up in the crib.
If you are going to place toys in the crib, make sure they are large and soft with no sharp edges! Do not give your child stuffed animals or other toys having buttons or parts which can be swallowed.
You want to make sure that curtain or blind cords are up and out of the reach of your toddler. Even though they may be up high enough and out of reach from the floor level, make certain that she cannot reach them from her crib.
A bit of common sense and knowledge will help to ensure that your child is as safe as can be in your home.
